Summer Camp Job Postings

Killarney Lutheran Camp is looking for the following qualified personnel to fill the open summer camp positions. These positions are needed to hold an overnight children’s summer camp. The camp is typically held during a two-week period in July, beginning after the 4th of July holiday. These positions would be permanent until the employee would no longer want to work for Killarney Lutheran Camp. Lodging (either residing in the campground or staff cabin) and meals are included while working at summer camp. Applicants may apply for multiple positions and be hired for both (i.e. Nurse/EMT and Camp Counselor).

Camp Director

The Camp Director reports to the Programs Committee and Camp President.  The Camp Director is in charge of all activities, events, planning, day to day operations, and assuring the care, safety, and protection of all campers in attendance of a coed children’s overnight summer camp.  The Camp Director will be present or residing at Camp Killarney during the duration of summer camp hours. Camp Director also assists with budgeting, oversees all personnel that are hired or volunteers for summer camp, and coordinates the necessary trainings needed to keep all employees current with the State of Michigan LARA regulations.  The director will also coordinate that the hired summer camp staff meets the background clearance and fingerprinting requirements set forth by the State of Michigan.  

Killarney Lutheran Camp is requiring the Camp Director to be a WELS member in good standing.

The following qualifications are required which is set forth by the State of Michigan:

  1. Minimum 21 Years old
  2. Have a minimum of 8 weeks of cumulative full-time experience working with a population similar to that which the camp serves.
  3. Have a minimum of 4 weeks of full-time administrative experience in an organized camp or similar program.
  4. The above administrative roles will qualify for teachers or staff ministers within the WELS.

Salary: $3,000/year

Camp Nurse/EMT

The Camp Nurse/EMT reports to the camp director.  This person will keep health records of all campers and staff.   The nurse/EMT is also in charge of administering medications to the campers as directed by parent/legal guardian, as well as keeping the medications in a locked and secured area.   This person is required to reside at camp (24 hours a day) while it is in session.  If the Nurse/EMT needs to leave camp, they may find a substitute with one of the following qualifications. (Assisting with kitchen help will be likely.)

The following qualifications are desired:

  1. Minimum 18 Years old
  2. WELS member in good standing
  3. One of the following qualifications are required in addition to a current CPR card:   

(a) A licensed physician.
(b) A licensed physician’s assistant.
(c) A licensed nurse practitioner.
(d) A registered nurse.
(e) A licensed practical nurse.
(f) A licensed emergency medical technician.
(g) A licensed medical first responder.
(h) An adult who is certified as a wilderness first responder or has met the requirements equivalent to those set forth by the National Outdoor Leadership School manual number 16175.
 

Salary: $500/week

Camp Aquatic Supervisor/Lifeguard

The Aquatic Supervisor/Lifeguard reports to the Camp Director. This person shall be responsible for the enforcement of safety rules and procedures governing all aquatic activity and will be present during all aquatic activities at Camp Killarney. 

The following qualifications are required:

  1. Minimum 18 Years old
  2. WELS member in good standing (desired)
  3. Current CPR Card
  4. Equivalent to the lifeguard and CPR requirements in the American Red Cross manuals, numbers 655730 and 652161 respectively.  
  5. Equivalent certifications shall include, but not be limited to, Young Men’s Christian Association lifeguard course, the National Waterpark Pool lifeguard training, Boy Scouts of America lifeguard training, or other nationally recognized lifeguard training program, as approved by the State of Michigan LARA.

Salary: $50/day (Position is for afternoon hours/during swim time Monday-Friday)

Camp Cook

The Camp Cook reports to the Camp Director.  This person will oversee any additional kitchen staff.  The cook is responsible for planning the menu and providing/preparing three meals a day for the campers.  Camp Cook will also order the food and supplies needed for summer camp, as well as assist with kitchen budgeting. Additional responsibilities include that a camper with special dietary needs is provided a diet and accommodations in accordance with the camper’s needs and with the instructions of the camper’s authorized person or a physician.

The following qualifications are desired:

  1. Minimum 18 Years old
  2. WELS member in good standing
  3. General cooking experience and knowledge
  4. Strong organizational skills
  5. Good time management

Lead Camp Counselors (2 Male and 2 Female)

The Lead Camp Counselor will report to the Camp Director.  This person will be in charge of the campers residing in the bunkhouse, as well as leading and managing the campers and assistant camp counselors.  They will also manage and oversee the campers in the bunkhouse during nighttime hours.  Additional duties will involve leading and teaching the various activities taking place each day for the campers in attendance.  (Assisting with kitchen help will be likely.)

  3. Previous experience in working as a camp counselor
  4. Demonstrate respect and authority
  5. Show honesty and integrity
  6. Good leadership qualities 
  7. Good communication skills with children
  8. Problem solving attributes

Salary: $150/day

Assistant Camp Counselors (3 Male and 3 Female)

The Assistant Camp Counselor will report to the Lead Camp Counselor.  This person will assist the lead counselor with day to day activities of summer camp, as well as leading by example and overseeing the campers.  They will also assist with managing and overseeing the campers in the bunk house during nighttime hours.  There will also be many opportunities to take the lead for activities to prepare themselves to be a lead camp counselor.  This position will also assist the Camp Cook with kitchen assistance.
